Seasons are caused by the 23.5 degree angular "tilt" of the Earth's axis of rotation compared to the Earth's orbit around the Sun. When the northern hemisphere is tipped a bit toward the Sun, the northern hemisphere has spring and summer, while the southern hemisphere has fall and winter.
