Hurricanes, typhoons, and cyclones can have very varied periods of existence, from less than 1 day to more than 21 days. Almost all Atlantic hurricanes will spend less than 7 days at hurricane force (75 mph sustained winds or higher), most of the time because they make landfall somewhere in the Atlantic, Caribbean, or Gulf of Mexico.

In the Pacific, hurricanes from Mexico may cross the Pacific and may even become typhoons in the western part of the ocean. But because of their paths, they do not become damaging typhoons. Cyclones south of the equator (e.g. Australia) generally just die off, but some have crossed the entire continent east to west and reformed in the Indian ocean.

The record for the most persistent Atlantic tropical storm is an old one: Hurricane San Ciriaco in 1899 lasted for 28 days at tropical storm strength or higher. In 1966, Hurricane Faith traveled from Cape Verde to the Bahamas and to Scotland, traveling some 6850 miles. Hurricane/Typhoon John in 1994 lasted 31 days in the mid-Pacific, passing Hawaii and traveling 7165 miles to the International Date Line.
