It depends on which continent they are located. Vast treeless plains in eastern Europe are known as Steppes, in South America they are called Pampas, in Africa they are called Savannahs and in the Arctic they are known as Tundras.

Generally thought of as a large expanse of fairly flat landscape stretching to the horizon in all directions, with no trees (and frequently no buildings or anything else either).
