The correct term for hurricanes is tropical cyclone. This is the generic term that covers tropical storms of both the northern and Southern Hemisphere. Cyclones in the Americas are called hurricanes, and cyclones in Asian waters and the China Sea are called typhoons. They are generally just called cyclones around Australia, the Western Pacific, the Indian ocean and the south Pacific.

The next two names that might be used to name Atlantic tropical storms or hurricanes are Oscar and Patty. These names have never been used to name a storm before. At the rate the season is going it is likely that these names will be used, but there is no guarantee they will be hurricanes, as a system need only be a tropical storm to be named.
