A small quantity of aqueous sodium hydroxide forms white gelatinous precipitate of Aluminium hydroxide which on reacting with excess sodium hydroxide forms a soluble salt Sodium aluminate.

AlCl3 + 3NaOH = Al(OH)3 + 3NaCl

Al(OH)3 + NaOH = NaAlO2 + 2H2O
