Quadruplex was invented by the Ampex Cooperation of San Carlos California as the worlds first marketable and proven reliable broadcast video tape their were other formats such as the British Vera system but none were proven ready for public use. one of the main contributors to the design of Quadruplex video tape was Ampex engineer Fred Pfost. the challenge faced by the design team was the length of the recording time and the tape speed. on the British Vera the tape speed ran at 200 inches per second and used a stationary audio and video head for a maxim recording and play back time of 15 minutes. Quadruplex used a vertical spinning video head for the video turning at 14400 rpm and two stationary heads one large one for audio and another small one for the control track. the audio and control track were written on the top and bottom of the tape and the video signal was recorded in two separate tracks by the rotating head in the center of the tape. two tape speeds were attained and were also high quality speeds in the audio format as well 15 inches per second gave two hours of record time at high quality and 30 inches per second offered superior quality for one hours worth of recording Quadruplex used two inch tape and was one sided only meaning you didnt flip the reels and record a side two. when the machines were demoed to the network mainly ABC they were barley out of the prototype stage they were large and over engineered as time progressed and lots of Quadruplex tapes were produced the networks liked the big machine and its design so the prototype design was never changed Quadruplex was excepted and their were so many tapes made in the format the networks continued to use them well into the late 60`s and 90`s until replaced by 1 inch c which was inferior in many many ways except the editing capabilities. by looking at so many quads today with the head covers left off as most always were they look almost prototype in nature they were big and most required dry air for the air guides except I think the AVR - 1 and the RCA Quadruplex machines which was the only other company licensed by Ampex to build and manufacture the machines. I have been told their was a upgrade coming for HD TV in the early nineties it would be great to still be using quad today I would have loved to be a tape operator... !!!

When did widescreen become a standard for UK tv?

Widescreen television was introduced in the UK and Germany at the beginning of the 1990s. The rest of Europe started to move to widescreen a few years later. The new format was used on standard definition signals before HD broadcasts were started. Widescreen was broadcast alongside standard 4:3 content. A widscreen signal (WSS) is sent with the broadcast to indicate the format the television should display. Within 10 years. almost all content is produced in widescreen format and archive material is generally converted to widescreen format before broadcast.

What is the difference between an S video cable and component video cables?

For many years, the standard method of hooking analog video devices to one another has been through 75 ohm video coaxial cable. Long before these cables were in common use in the home, broadcast and production houses were wired with 75 ohm video cable, generally running composite video. The advantages of 75 ohm video coax include excellent impedance tolerance (good for preventing signal reflection, which causes ringing and ghosting), excellent shield performance (important in a high-noise environment like a TV studio), and low loss (good when one needs to run video over long distances without significant degradation).

Is there any higher definition than 1080p?

There are numerous formats that are in use in television and broadcast. Currently, 1080i 50Hz or 60Hz is the highest standard being broadcast. 720p is the same amount of data, but fewer lines and is also broadcast. 1080p is not broadcast at present and is restricted to local sources. BluRay discs, for example, can use 1080p. Broadcasters have no plans to use 1080p on their outputs at present. We can expect to wait several years before we see them start broadcasting that resolution. In film and some television post production work, 2000 and even 4000 lines are used. Once again, these are not broadcast and are used only for high quality image processing.

What VCR format lost out to VHS in the 1980's?

JVC and others developed VHS (Video Home System) while Sony launched the Betamax format as a direct competitor. Although Betamax was technically superior to VHS and offered a higher picture quality, it lost the video tape format war after a number of years. The Betamax adopters were very limited with only Sony and Sanyo making any impact in the market. Betamax was more popular in North America than Europe and was still on the market for several years after they disappeared from British and European stores. It is interesting to note that some of the technologies and developments that went into the Betamax format were further developed into a format called Betacam. Betacam was the first of the truly portable broadcast tape formats and became the de facto standard throughout the broadcast world for news gathering. It is only in recent years that other formats have competed with Betacam as the industry moves to HD.
