Modern schools education has made people literate but not educated and How?

Many school graduates are not prepared to think for themselves, but require constant " spoonfeeding ". So we use the expression to mean they can read and write but not think things through for themselves. Many American universities lament this ever-increasing dumbing down of the younger generations. For example, I recently met a recent university graduate from the USA, teaching English in Bangkok. She was struggling with the Writing component of the High School English classes she was teaching. She admitted to me that she had never written any compositions in four years of university studies, not even at exam time. Her exams were all multiple-choice types of questions. So she is now feeling very insecure about teaching language learners how to write compositions. She now feels that she is not very well educated and qualified to do her job properly. She is worrying that her students and/or their parents may be complaining about her abilities in English to the school, and that she may not be able to hold onto her great job and interesting lifestyle in Thailand.
