A fugitive is someone who flees from an unpleasant/uncongenial/intolerable or dangerous situation. They flee from pursuit, threat or restraint.

The word 'fugitive' is from Latin fugitivus, from fugio to flee, and thus means one who flees. The meaning therefore includes, not only those sought by law enforcement officers and agencies, but all those who flee danger and seek refuge.

Examples of fugitive(s):

  • an escaped felon, or a suspect hiding from being apprehended or arrested.
  • refugees, e.g. those fleeing from persecution in their native country, a country that has either failed to protect them from persecution, or which itself is the source of threat to life or who are pursuing a policy of denial of basic human rights and freedoms to their citizens.
  • Holocaust fugitive children were protected and cared for by concerned individuals and groups.
  • "Fugitive Tells of Poverty Under Red Rule in Poland" ~Chicago Herald Tribune, February 16, 1956.

A fugitive may be fleeing from vigilante violence. Or from a lawless mob intent on harming the target(s) of their wrath. A child or a battered wife can be a fugitive from an abusive home environment.
