In the story Aladdin supposedly comes from China, but in those days (when the story was first told) that merely meant a country away to the East. It is obvious from the characters that he really comes from somewhere like Persia (Iran). The name Aladdin itself is Arabic for "Nobility of the Faith".

The tale of Aladdin and the genie originally comes from the tales of Arabian Nights, originally told by the Princess Schezerade when she was captured. Her kidnapper was going to execute her the next day, but after he heard the stories she told, he allowed her to live for another night. This continued for a long time, and eventually, he released her from her status as a prisoner.
