To change the digital speedometer display from mph to kph in a 2004 Mini Cooper, turn on the ignition without starting the engine. Press and hold the trip reset button on the speedometer, then turn the ignition switch to the "On" position while continuing to hold the button. After a few seconds, the display should switch between mph and kph; release the button when your desired unit is displayed. Lastly, turn off the ignition to save the changes.
The most likely cause of 'dark' and 'intermittent' responses from a digital display is when the individual bulbs at the back are making bad electrical connection with the ribbon-loom
You use the radio menu and it changes the speedo display
Turn ignition to 'accessories' (not 'ignition on'), then press the trip computer button for about a second, and release. The display should flash 'km/h / mph'. Press the 'M' of the hours and minutes clock adjustment, at the left of the display, to select the speedo reading you want.
Find another similar(2000-2002) dash/speedo cluster and replace it. Note: the USA models will display MPH larger and CDN models will display KPH larger but this is no problem if you make or even buy a 'face' for the speedo, why not just insert that over the OEM speedometer? No. The speed sensor is located on the transmission, and is what drives the speedometer cable, which drives the speedo head. The speedo head is another name for the the speedometer, which is the display gauge that you see while sitting in the car.
Unless you have a digital speedo there is no reason why the battery would effect the cable at all. Speedo cables are completely independent of anything and everything else on most bikes. (Again, unless there is a digital speedo on the bike.) Its most likely just coincidence that the cable went out at the same time you replaced the battery. Check your connections at the guage and the hub and make sure they are tight b4 you replace the cable.
Push the set button until the odometer reading appears. Press and hold the reset button until the display switches from kph to mph or vice versa.
