Why you can't push the piston back.
The majority of calipers that incorporate a hand brake mechanism have an adjuster inside which compensates for pad wear. Forcing the piston back can damage this adjuster. Ideally you should use a piston wind back tool - this rotates the piston and pushes it back at the same time.
You can get away without this tool, but do NOT use grips on the hydraulic surface! Most handbrake calipers require you to rotate the piston clockwise, do this a turn at a time, then push piston back gently (if you apply the handbrake lever slightly by hand - you'll feel when you've taken up the play)
Saab 9000, Volvo 480 and Mazda handbrake calipers have an hex key adjuster hidden behind a bung - use a 4mm hex key to wind/adjust pistons on these type of calipers.

Try turning it with long nose pliers
The battery is dead, you are going nowhere so why take the handbrake off. But, if you insist, just connect a good battery to the dead battery and jump start the engine.

To fix the handbrake on a 1997 Vauxhall Astra, first, inspect the handbrake cable for any signs of wear or damage and replace it if necessary. Next, check the adjustment of the handbrake itself; you can do this by tightening the adjustment nut located under the center console or near the rear brakes. If the brake shoes are worn, replace them to ensure proper engagement of the handbrake. Finally, test the handbrake to ensure it holds the vehicle securely when applied.
To adjust the handbrake on a Vauxhall Zafira, first, ensure the vehicle is on a flat surface and the wheels are chocked. Locate the handbrake adjustment nut beneath the center console; it typically requires removing the trim to access it. Turn the nut clockwise to tighten the handbrake or counterclockwise to loosen it, ensuring that the handbrake lever has about 5-7 clicks of resistance when applied. Finally, test the handbrake's effectiveness before reassembling any removed trim.
I have been given a courtesy car but I am having problems taking off the handbrake. It is an 02 car. What can I do?

On a Vauxhall Vectra, the handbrake cable adjuster is typically located under the center console. To access it, you may need to remove the center console cover or panel. The adjuster is often found at the rear of the handbrake lever assembly, allowing you to tighten or loosen the handbrake cable as needed. Always consult the vehicle's manual for specific instructions related to your model year.
because the handbrake is a ratchet mechanism. the sound is the pin moving along the teeth. depressing the button and lifting stops this sound
To replace the handbrake cable on a 1998 Vauxhall Vectra 1.8, start by safely lifting the car and removing the rear wheels for access. Disconnect the old cable from the handbrake lever inside the car and under the vehicle at the calipers. Install the new cable by routing it through the same path, attaching it at both ends, and then reconnecting it to the handbrake lever. Finally, adjust the tension as needed to ensure the handbrake functions properly.
