The engine serial number on a 2.0 new Beetle engine is located on the crankcase. It is at the alternator support flange.
You can not. The two cars are completely different...the New Beetle has the engine at the wrong end. The New Beetle is bigger than the Old.

To replace the thermostat on a 2005 VW New Beetle, first, ensure the engine is cool and disconnect the negative battery terminal. Remove the engine cover, then drain the coolant from the radiator. Disconnect the hoses from the thermostat housing and remove the housing bolts to take out the old thermostat. Install the new thermostat, reattach the housing and hoses, refill the coolant, and reconnect the battery.
It is in front of the two fans at the front of the engine.

To change the thermostat in a 2003 Volkswagen Beetle, first, ensure the engine is cool and disconnect the battery. Remove the engine cover and drain the coolant from the radiator. Then, locate the thermostat housing, detach the hoses connected to it, and remove the housing to access the thermostat. Replace it with the new thermostat, reassemble the housing and hoses, refill the coolant, and reconnect the battery.
To add water to the radiator on a new beetle, first remove the lower radiator hose. Then add water to the coolant reservoir.
