To remove the starter from a 1996 Polaris Explorer 300 4x4 ATV, first ensure the ignition is off and disconnect the battery to prevent any electrical issues. Remove the starter cover and disconnect the electrical connections from the starter. Then, unbolt the starter from its mounting brackets, making sure to keep track of the hardware. Finally, carefully pull the starter out from its housing.
Remove your battery. Remove the battery tray. Remove the air filter housing and air intake duct. Remove the starter motor mounting bolts. Pull the starter away from the engine a bit. Detach the electrical connector from the starter solenoid. Remove the nut and disconnect the battery starter cable. Remove the starter and put in your new one.

Disconnect the negativebattery terminal, starter is accessible from under the car passenger side, it bolts into the transmission with 3 bolts. Disconnect the wires from the starter, remove the bolts and reinstall new starter, reconnect wires.
YOU HAVE TO REMOVE THE FIVE BOLTS ON THE REDUCTION GEAR COVER AND REMOVE THE GEARS AND WATCH OUT FOR THE SHIM WASHER AND THEN YOU WILL HAVE ROOM TO REMOVE THE STARTER. INSTALL IN REVERSE ORDER.

This is a real pain but you have to remove the Intake Manifold to get to the starter. You dont have to remove it all the way but disconnect it enough to have room to get to the 2 bolts of the starter. It will take you at least 2-3 hrs to do everything but trust me, you will save about $300 if you do it than taking it to the shop.
