"How to keep you Volkswagen alive. For the Complete Idiot." By John Muir. This book will not only tell you how to do ANYTHING on a bug, but it's classical wit, humor, and ease of reading makes it a classic. It's always on my nightstand.... -67 bug owner
A 1976 Chevy did not have a points ignition, but that has nothing to do with the correct timing. You will find that the engine runs best with about 8-12 degrees BTDC.
Timing 8 Degress BTDC Plugs .035 Points are set by dwell 28-32 degrees = approx. .017 RPM 750
after replacing points in engine, can correct timing be done to engine if engine is not run.
The car has electornic ignition. There are no points. The timing is a coil packand set for life.
i do mine at 15 thou and set timing at 12degrees BTDC
No gas, battery bad, coil bad, points or condenser bad, timing WAY off, carb screwed up, or engine broken.
Dist. Points gap is .016" (0.4mm)
To reset the timing on an 88 Mighty Max with a 1-piston engine, start by disconnecting the negative battery terminal. Next, remove the timing cover and align the crankshaft pulley to the correct timing mark on the engine block. Adjust the distributor's position until the rotor points at the correct cylinder, usually marked on the distributor itself. Finally, reassemble everything and reconnect the battery to test the timing.
points gap on a 76 volkswagen beetle
A 1983 engine doesn't have points, but if you have changed to a points distributor use the same timing settings that were used with the original distributor. if you can time an engine with a hei dist. it's the same way with points. you have to use a timing light, and turn the dist. to retard ,or advance the timing. If the engine has been fitted with a GM type distributor there should be an access door to the side of the distributor cap. Use a "dwell tach" (with the engine running) to set the dwell, then use the timing light to set the timing. If it's not a HEI ignition then it's safe to assume that it's not EFI either so you'll set the timing by loosening the retaining bolt at the base of the distributor, then turn the distributor to align the timing mark with the amount of advance indicated for your altitude. The timing light will cause the mark to appear that the dampener pulley has stopped and you will be able to move the mark as you turn the distributor. NOTE! When setting the timing always remember to disconnect the vacuum line.
To set the points gap on a 1975 Yamaha YZ 80, you'll want to adjust the ignition points to a gap of approximately 0. points to ensure proper ignition timing. This can typically be done by removing the flywheel and using a feeler gauge to measure the gap as you rotate the engine to the correct timing mark. Always refer to the specific service manual for exact specifications and procedures for your model.
The 2.7L didn't come out until 1998. So reask question with correct year, make, and model information.
