For P90X workouts, it is recommended to use adjustable dumbbells that allow you to easily change the weight. This way, you can adjust the resistance based on the specific exercise you are doing. Adjustable dumbbells are versatile and convenient for P90X routines.
Besides what you already mentioned you also use the long stretch bands for certain activities involved in the P90X training.
If you want to use dumb bells for training you will want to check out Frankoman's Dumbbell Home Training routine. It is a 3 day routine that uses dumbbells only and a bench. The results speak for themselves. Or you can try P90X, this program is widely known for its use of dumbbells and body exercises to exercise.

You do not have to use Power 90 to use P90x. However if you feel P90x is too much, then you should try Power 90 and then return to P90x.

I would suggest the "Biggest Loser" series. It has been proven on Live television that their workouts work! Also, as I have been doing research on this question, the same line keeps popping up. Doing isolated workouts DOES NOT work. Changing up your workouts creates the best way to burn fat. With that in mind, I also suggest that you do not ONLY use the "Biggest Loser DVDs/Workouts". There is also "Zumba", "Insanity", "P90X" and "Yoga" Series that I have seen at Wal-Mart. What is most important is that you find a couple of workouts that you enjoy and have fun!
I personally like to use a butterfly machine to work the chest area but you can also use dumbbells to get similar results. Arm curls, raising the weights above your head and doing the put your arms out to the side and draw them together in front of your chest should be good starters.
