when you breathe, you need oxygen more quickly. this is because your muscles are working more and harder and to provide energy for them to do this, oxygen is needed to complete the equation for cellular respiration. and, because more oxygen is needed, the heart pumps faster to send more red blood cells to collect more oxygen from the lungs and to the body parts.

Nonetheless, we do not breathe more quickly because we need to inhale oxygen. we breathe quickly because we need to exhale the carbon dioxide which is a bi-product of the process of cellular respiration. we breath according to our carbon dioxide levels in our lungs.

hence, when we exercise, the breathing rate increases as we need to exhale more carbon dioxide which was a result of taking in more oxygen. the heart pumps faster to circulate the oxygen around the body faster and provide the muscles with enough energy.
