Heat is for therapy, cold is for swelling. If you have a swollen finger you should use ice, you should check with your doctor if the swelling doesn't go down.
Ice it compress it and elevate it. PRICE: protection, rest, ice, compression, the elevation not so much. Stop playing ball, if that was what hurt it, but if you absolutely have to, tape it with sports tape to another finger for support.
