As in any interpretation of rules, some sects of Islam have different opinions of the suitability of fish in general for consumption. It is generally believed that all fishes with scales are halal and those without scales are haram. Some sects believe simply that all fish are halal. The roe of these fish (caviar) is considered to be the same as the species of fish from which it comes. Some caveats apply regarding the gathering of the caviar. It must be taken from living fish, It must be gathered in a way that does not harm the fish if it is left alive, or if the fish is killed it must not be wasted.
