Mohamed (peace be upon him) conquered Makkah peacefully with 10,000 of his supporters. It was in the 8th year of Islamic Hejri Calendar during the Islamic fasting month of Ramadan. After the conquest, all the Makkans became Muslims and afterwrods they were the essence of the Islamic armies that spread Islam in the world e.g. Persia, Roman Empire, Africa etc.

They did not attack Mecca. When the number of people who embraced Islam in Arabia reached to a hign level, Muhammad was commanded by God to take Mecca back. It always belonged to the One God of Abraham; so Muhammad took it back and clensed it of idols.
