Cichlids come from different places and totally different water conditions. The two main types/groups are the ones from the tropical Lakes of Africa (Malawi and Tanganyka)and the ones from the Amazon River and its tributaries in South America. The ones from Africa need water that is very Alkaline (around pH8 to 9) and has a high degree of hardness (Over 15dGH). The ones from South America are the opposite and need their water quite Acid (around pH5 to 6.5) and very soft (less than 10dGH)
