What are the small worm things in your hermit crabs cage?

oh yeah i had little white worms in my hermit crabitat a couple of weeks ago...sift the sand or if that will take too long put all the sand on a tray and sit it in the sun for a couple of hrs or put it in the oven. check online to see if they are harmful to our little creepy-crawly friends and check how long it takes for it to bake in an oven! hope this helps! xo

if those small stringy things in your crab cage are not alive, it is probably fecal matter. If there are live worms, they may be harmless animals feeding on fecal matter and dead plant material, or they may be parasites. Check with the aquarium or pet store where you purchased your crabs.

When the substrate of the hermit crab tank is not changed monthly (maximum) there's a good chance that mites can start to form on the tank. They're really hard to see but typically they'll float around in the tank and gather on your crabs.

Solution:

• 1. Give your crabs a bath in Sea water bath (declorinated as usual). Typically submerging them 3-4 times. Use a maginifying glass to check if the mites are gone. The process may take up to a few weeks and should not be repeated more than 4-5 days at a time. ALWAYS keep infected crabs in an isolation tank if there is any sign of mites.
• 2. Replace crabarium substrate and clean all the crab items in boiling distilled water, Disinfecting the crab items.
• 3. Remember to replace the substrate of the crab tank regularly and avoid letting food for too long.
• Avoid using wood/plant material until mites are gone.

Alternative: Predatory mites may also be a less-stressful solution for both you and your crab but always remember to take caution to ensure they cannot harm the crabs and are sufficient enough to rid the crabarium of the mites that plague it.
