Where does the name canchola come from?

My grandfather told me it came from northern Italy along the border with Switzerland. Which he said explains why many Canchola's are lighter in skin tone then the southern Italians. Somewhere when my great great great grandfather immigrated thru New York, the Immigration officials changed the spelling of the original name. Which I could get more information on it. Only what has been passed down by Generation to generation. Hope this is helpful.

I was in Italy and Italians did NOT recognize the name Canchola at all. My grandfather, born in Mexico in early 1900s, to a father who was also a Canchola Mexican, from 1800s in a small village in the hills of Mexico as a farmer. Genetic tests I had on my father reveal Native Mayan and Jewish/Iberian ancestry. My grand mother was Italian, but was a different surname. My father's cousin with same grandparents, also a Canchola, however, did not reveal any Italian, but also revealed Jewish ancestry. My grandfather's physical appearance and that of his siblings was very much native American. However, he had to have had recessive genes for blue eyes as my father was born with blue eyes. My father's 7 other siblings had brown. His one cousin paid someone to do a genealogical study on the family, and it definitely pointed to Jewish/Spanish ancestry. He died soon after I heard this and I haven't been able to get in touch with his children to discuss more about what was found.

Where and when in Italy was the surname last known? Precolonial? Or later?
