The plot of the Star Wars saga, more notably in episode III, shares many similarities with the history of ancient Rome. For instance, Emperor/Senator Palpatine could be compared to Julius Caesar. Though Caesar was never a senator, he essentially single handedly transformed the Republic into a new Empire, from democracy to Dictatorship. Similarly, in episode VI Luke Skywalker takes down the empire, being a part of the Rebel Alliance. The Rebels in Star Wars could be compared to the Germanic barbarians that conquered the Western Roman Empire. Ultimately, Lucas most likely based much of his saga's background around the history of Rome.
