Immediately after the monster attacks during the battle phase, you have a window to respond to the attack. This bit is not yet the damage step, this is where you'd use cards like Sakuretsu Armor. You can actually have more chains after this but before the damage step, and while the timing is no longer correct for cards that respond to the attack, you could still use things like Book of Moon.

The Damage Step follows this, and the following happens in order - face-down monsters are flipped, ATKs and DEFs compared and damage dealt (Damage Calculation), flip effects are activated, then destroyed monsters go to the graveyard. Some monsters have effects that insert themselves between these steps - Ally of Justice Catastor activates before monsters are flipped, while things like Goyo Guardian activate after the destroyed monsters leave the field. But after that, the Damage Step is over and you are back in the main part of the Battle Phase.

If a monster gains attack during the damage step is it still destroyed To be more specific Alien monsters with A-counter abilitys?

The monster's ATK only matters during Damage Calculation itself. If a 'weaker' monster attacks a stronger one, but that weaker monster has an effect that boosts its ATK during Damage Calculation, then the weaker monster will survive if it then had the higher ATK. It doesn't matter that afterwards, its ATK goes back to normal - Damage Calculation is the part of the Damage Step where monsters are considered destroyed by battle, and the weaker monster had a higher ATK for that.

When does Damage Calculation take place?

Right after a monster attacks something.

If a monster attacks man eater bug does the ma-eater bug survive the battle if it targets the attacking monster?

Yes, it does. When a Flip Effect monster is attacked, in the Damage Step you flip it, then calculate Damage, and then apply the flip effect before sending destroyed by battle monsters to the graveyard. So even if Man-Eater Bug was considered destroyed by battle, it will still be able to destroy one monster on the field.

Can you activate Defense Draw after an Ancient Gear monster inflicts battle damage to prevent you from taking damage?

I am fairly sure you cannot activate "Defense Draw" after an opponent's Ancient Gear monster inflicts Battle Damage in order to reduce the damage to 0 and draw a card. Here's why:First of all, this scenario is referring to an effect most Ancient Gear monsters possess: If this card attacks, your opponent cannot activate any Spell or Trap Cards until the end of the Damage Step.In case you did not know, the Damage Step is the part of the Battle Step that consists of (1) the point right before damage is calculated between two monsters, (2) damage being dealt to a monster, (3) dealing any damage to the player's Life Points (LPs), and (4) if any monsters are destroyed, they are sent to the Graveyard."Defense Draw" must activate during that third portion of the Damage Step when you are going to lose LPs. Since this is still during the Damage Step and if you are being attacked by an Ancient Gear monster with the above effect, you cannot activate "Defense Draw".

Does damage calculation mean you lose life points for example does the owner of Spirit Reaper lose points when an opponent's monster attacks it in defense position?

Answer: The "damage calculation is calculated normally" text in Spirit Reaper(SR) means if your SR is attacked while it's on attack position then you will lose LP for that battle but SR won't be destroyed and sent to the graveyard as a result of battle because of it's card effect.Answer!"Damage calculation" is the damage a player receives either due to a monster attacking or by a card effect. Damage calculation is done during the Damage Step of the Battle Phase. If a card's effect reads something like, When this Defense Position card is attacked and the ATK of the attacking monster is lower than the DEF of this card, after Damage Calculation destroy the attacking monster., then that means after damage is inflicted upon a player the rest of its effect activates destroying the attacking monster. More examples-Reflect Bounder: When card is face-up Attack Position and is attacked by a monster on your opponent's side of the field, before damage calculation is resolved in the Damage Step, this card inflicts damage to your opponent's Life Points equal to the ATK of the attacking monster. This means before damage would be inflicted upon either player by the attack during the Damage Step, the monster's effect activates inflicting damage. Then damage is calculated. The Hunter With 7 Weapons: When this card is Normal Summoned, declare 1 Type of monster. When battling that Type of monster, increase the ATK of this card by 1000 points during Damage Calculation. What this translates into is that during the Damage Step, simple increase this card's attack by 1000.

Does damage calculation occur with Zubaba Knight in Yu-Gi-Oh?

When two monsters battle, both monsters must remain on the field, for Damage Calculation to occur. If a monster leaves the field before Damage Calculation, then that particular battle step ends.If Zubaba Knight attacks a face-up defense positon monster, that monster is destroyed at the beginning of the Damage Step. The battle step ends there, no damage calculation occurs, no damage is dealt to either player, and Zubaba Knight may not declare another attack (unless if a card effect permits).

Is a face-down monster flipped face-up if attacked by a monster?

The monster will be flipped face-up at the beginning of the Damage Step. If the attacking monster is destroyed or switched to defence position before this, the defending monster is not flipped, as there is no Damage Step.

When does Damage Calculation take place?

Right after a monster attacks something.

If your monster is in ATK mode and someone attacks you what happens?

You enter the Damage Step and Damage Calculation as normal. You compare the ATKs of the two monsters, which will determine if one or both are destroyed by battle, and if the controlling players take any battle damage too.

When attacking a higher attack monster with an elemental hero with skyscraper does the attacking elemental hero monster get destroyed too since it gains the attack during the damage step only?

The Damage Step is where it is determined which monster is destroyed by battle, and which player takes damage. So while Skyscraper's bonus 'only' counts during the Damage Step, that's exactly the right place to ensure the attacking E-HERO destroys a stronger attack target and survives battle. There's no concept of 'monster damage' in Yu-Gi-Oh, there is no penalty or consequence for losing the boost after Damage Calculation against a monster that was originally stronger. The damage step is the only step in which their calculated ATKs and DEFs are relevant, and during that, the E-HERO's ATK was higher.

Can you activate Fire Formation Tensen after the face-down monster your beast-warrior attacks is flipped face-up in Yu-Gi-Oh?

Yes, because it is a quick effect that modifies the ATK of monsters, it can be activated in the Damage Step, before Damage Calculation.

Does Skyscraper effect activate if your Elemental Hero Monster is being attacked by a higher attacker monster?

SkyscraperField Spell/SPELLWhen a monster that includes "Elemental Hero" in its card name attacks, if its ATK is lower than the ATK of the attack target, increase the ATK of the attacking monster by 1000 points during damage calculation only. No, its effect does not activate. "When a monster...attacks...". This automatically tells you that it activates when your monster attacks, but does not activate if your monster is attacked.
