In general, the cure for breathing is worse than the breathing is. Sometimes it doesn't seem so, I know. If it is that bad though, then the answer isn't ceasing to exist... it is change. Change seems impossible sometimes, seems too hard... but when it is a choice between going through the anguish of dying and the anguish of changing... change can win. I know that it seems sometimes like no one cares and that the blackness is just closing in... there is no way out. But there still is, even when we can't see it.
