The Space and submarine novels of Verne, most of Asimov and Clarke, and other sci-fi writers include Julian May and Robert Heinlein. Some booksellers lump the Tarzan novels of Edgar Rice Burroughs as science-fiction, others do not, seeing them as adventure tales.
Any work by Ursula Leguin.
Any story which is more concerned with the Social Sciences rather than the more physical sciences. When no great speculation into 'as yet unknown advances in science' are in play.
Here are some of the different types of Science Fiction stories you might see:
Some science fiction archetypes would be a wise scientist, or a crazy scientist. Another archetype would be the handsome courageous captain or pilot. Cold logical robots or android is another archetype.
Some types of science fiction writing are: Apocolyptic Post-apocolyptic Hard science fiction (where the science is detailed and plausible) Soft science fiction (where the science is not detailed and less important to the story) Space opera (lives of people during space travel, i.e. Star Trek, Star Wars) Dystopian
"Frankestein" is a Science Fiction novel,or gothic science fiction.
Some would say that science fiction excludes fantasy but Arthur C. Clarke said, "Any significantly advanced technology is indistinguishable from magic. Science fiction authors have mixed science fiction with all other forms of literature. There are science fiction lyrics to songs, science fiction poetry, science fiction mixed with humor, science fiction mixed with westerns, science fiction mixed with romance.
Yes it is Science Fiction
The Red Pyramid is a science fiction book.
"Starship Troopers" by Robert Heinlein is an example of a science fiction book .
In the realm of fiction defined as science fiction, science is used every where in the spectrum from vile abuse to credible application. -- added answer --- Hard science is usually written by people who are scientiffically literate , even if they don't have degrees, and usually treat science pretty close to reality. Soft science pretty much uses it as little more than a "science theme" , but might as well be a fantasy novel full of magic, they're just blaming science for it instead of wizards. George Lucas's Star Wars would be an example of soft science. I Robot staring Will Smith would be an example of hard science.
An example of science fiction is Isaac Asimov's books about robots. He invented the Three Laws of Robotics to explain how robots would be programmed.
There are many science fiction stories- the whole Atlantis genre, for example that have nothing to do with Space Travel but do go to Inner space- underwater, time travel, etc. Prepare to submerge! Flood l; 3; 5; 7. take her down fast! A space fantasy isn't necessarily science fiction. As the name suggests a space fantasy would be a fantasy set in space, with an absence of (much) applied science. For example STAR WARS has precious little science in it and THE FORCE is fantasy. It would be a space fantasy.

A science-fiction film will contain elements of fact and speculation to further the plot of the film . Fact and Fiction , what could be possible and what may be probable . 2001 : A Space Odyssey is an excellent example of a film with both elements of science and fiction .
Science Fiction is a fiction based on science.
There have been a few incidences where the speculation in science fiction has in fact become true. The most famous example is Arthur C. Clarke's prediction on synchronous satellites. The science can be fiction or already possible. What matters is that you have a believable character using that science or perhaps a warning where that science could take us in the future.
Science fiction
The Lottery would fall in that broad grey area that separates Science Fiction from regular fiction. It all comes down to how you define science fiction:Hard science fiction: Inclusion of the physical sciences: physics, chemistry, biology, nuclear science, astrophysics etc. In this case The Lottery would not be science fiction.Soft science fiction: Exploitation of the humanities: sociology, anthropology, Law, etc. In this case The Lottery could be considered Science Fiction.Interpolation and extrapolation. In this case The Lottery could be science fiction if it were constrained to the realm of soft science fiction."What If" Easily science fiction as no great 'forgiveness' for scientific deviations are made in this story."Utopia / Dystopia" Yes easily science fiction."Gadgetry Science Fiction" no.Science Fiction is that body of work to which we point when referencing the genera. I'm sure that there are many people who would be willing to include the Lottery as science fiction.
One example of a science fiction plot is "first contact." How would be treat aliens from another planet? How would these aliens treat us?
