What is wrong when a 96 Honda Accord heater gets very very hot and has a slight burning smell like antifreeze and temp gauge is running hotter?

Your car seems to have an overheating problem, check radiator hoses, cooing fans, presure test radiator (if you dont have a tester the local auto parts store will ussaly do it for free). and then check your water pump (easy pump test, hold upper radiator hose, and pull accel cable, the hose should bludge. You also need to change the heater core as that is what is giving you the smell of hot antifreeze
