Captain John C Fremont was famous for originally naming the entrance to San Francisco Bay, aka the Golden Gate Strait, in 1846. He named it "Chrysopylae" meaning Golden Gate, because it reminded him of the harbor "Chrysoceras" meaning Golden Horn in Instanbul.

He had no nickname. In his time that wasn't done like today. When he was caught trying to sell shares to his phony gold mine he was called a crook.
