Elizabeth Married?Elizabeth was never married. It was said she was married to her country (England). There are many theories for this:
  • Elizabeth thought that her husband might overpower her to become King
  • She never found anyone that she liked
  • She had bad memories about her father, King Henry VIII, divorcing two of his wives and beheading two as well
  • She may have had a deathly fear of childbirth which was a frequently life threateneing thing for women in those days to go through.

These are just theories that might not be true. They could be true though. The only way to find out is to ask Queen Elizabeth I yourself (this is impossible because she's dead).

Elizabeth I of England never married. The Tudor line ended with her. She was born September 1, 1533 and died without an heir on March 24, 1603. She was sometimes called The Virgin Queen, Gloriana, or Good Queen Bess. She was the fifth and final Tudor monarch.

There are many possible reasons why she never married, starting with the fact that her father, Henry VIII, had her mother Anne Boleyn beheaded for treason, a charge which was later proved unfounded. Nevertheless this would have had a profound influence on the young princess who was herself arrested and threatened with execution for years. She also may not have wanted to share power. She was Queen Regnant (by virtue of birth), but if she had married anyone with a remote claim to the throne, it may have started a dynastic crisis, or even war. It is not true that any man she married would become the reigning monarch. She was a profound feminist at a time when feminism was simply unheard of. When in 1588 Spain sent a naval armada to (unsuccessfully) invade England, Elizabeth made a famous speech to her troops while clad in the steel breastplate of a warrior. She said, "I know I have the body but of a weak and feeble woman; but I have the heart and stomach of a King!"

Wikipedia has a splendid article on her. Click the related link below.

Elizabeth's older sister Mary married Phillip. At Elizabeth's death the crown passed to Jame 6 of Scotland 1 of England. She was called the Virgin Queen; the US state of Virginia was named after her.
