Winnie the pooh. The original Pooh bear was orphaned in BC, Canada and was adopted by Canadian soldiers on their way to Europe during WWI. When the troops were ready to leave England for the front, he was left behind in care of the London Zoo. Being an extraordinary bear, he made many friends while his soldiers were away, and when they returned they decided to let Pooh stay in London when they returned home. Author A.A. Milne and his son met Winnie at the zoo, and the father included the Pooh in his stories.
