From Wikipedia: Climates in the Southern Hemisphere overall tend to be slightly milder than those in the northern hemisphere. This is because the southern hemisphere has significantly more ocean and less land. Water heats up and cools down more slowly than land. The southern hemisphere is also significantly less polluted than the northern hemisphere because of lower overall population densities (a total of 10 to 12% of the human population), lower levels of industrialisation, and smaller land masses (air currents run mostly west-east so pollution does not easily spread north or south).

Since the equator has a uniform day length and very direct sunlight, temperatures do not vary over the year and are always hot except at higher altitudes. At higher latitudes, day length not only varies but the angle of the sun is less oblique (more direct) when days are longer.

This creates a hot summer and a cool winter in the middle latitudes, and a mild summer and very cold winter at high latitudes. These extreme temperature contrasts and the short winter days mean growth occurs only during the hotter summer season, or in the spring where moisture is sufficiently limiting for summer growth (e.g. Central Asia, eastern Washington). In high latitudes, growth is restricted to a very short warm period regardless of moisture conditions, especially as the winter has almost no sunlight.

In the tropics, the chief seasonal changes are in rainfall due to the movement of the Intertropical Convergence Zone and the arid eastern side of the subtropical anticyclone. This leads to wet and dry seasons; typically except on eastern coasts the wet season occurs during and after the summer solstide and the dry season during and after the winter solstice. On some eastern coasts (Vietnam, Sri Lanka, northeastern Brazil) the wet season occurs during and before the winter solstice.

The southern hemisphere have smaller temperature variations because it has less land mass than the northern hemisphere. The land mass heats and cools more quickly than ocean and hence the bigger temperature variation.
