The boiling point of a liquid goes down as the atmospheric pressure decreases. At sea level water boils at 100 degrees C. As you go up higher the air pressure decreases (because there's less air above you). In 'mile high' Denver, Colorado, water boils at about 95 degrees C. Cooking, like all chemical reactions happens more slowly as the temperature decreases. Thus anything you cook by boiling will take longer at high altitudes. In a pressure cooker the pressure is higher than it is outside, so the water boils at a higher temperature and cooking times are reduced. In fact you don't have to live at high altitudes to benefit from using a pressure cooker. Even at sea level they are useful, especially for reducing the time for slow dishes such as stews, which is convenient and saves fuel.

What is the principle involved in pressure cooker?

At higher pressures, water boils at a higher temperature. A pressure cooker lets you cook at a higher pressure than regular saucepans so you can have a higher boiling temperature

Can you pressure cook a pint jar in a pressure cooker?

How does a pressure cooker work to cook food faster?

Because the temperatures are high in pressure cooker

Why would water in a laboratory boil at a temperature lower than 100 degrees celsius?

Not only in the laboratory, also at higher altitudes. The boiling point of water depends on the pressure. "100 degrees" is only at some pressure defined as standard pressure. At high altitudes (cities like La Paz, for example), it takes longer to cook food - because water boils at a lower temperature. Not only in the laboratory, also at higher altitudes. Is it important to have a stainless pressure cooker?

There are many things that can be cooked without a stainless pressure cooker. It would be important to have one if you would like to cook quickly because steam cookers cook faster than other cookwares. They can also cook at a higher temperature than the boiling point of water.

Can you use pressure cooker to cook dry foods?

no

How is solar cooker different from a normal pressure cooker?

A solar cooker and a pressure cooker are two completely different ways of cooking. A pressure cooker can still use a heat source like a gas or electric cook top. A solar cooker is as the mercy of the heat of the sun and the contents will only cook as well as the amount of heat it obtains.

How does pressure effects the time period of cooking food?

If you are referring to cooking with a pressure cooker, the higher pressure attained in this type of cooker allows the water to reach a higher temperature before boiling. This will cook food more quickly due to the higher temperature, which in turn is due to the higher pressure. Keep in mind that once water reaches the boiling point, the temperature remains constant; the only way to attain a higher temperature, then, is to increase the pressure.

What is the difference between a pressure cooker and a vacuum pressure cooker?

A pressure cooker uses steam from water to cook food and is usually found in a residential setting. A pressure fryer uses oil to cook the food. Pressure fryers are only found in restaurants and are generally used to fry chicken.
