It depends on the world view of your education. Nauru and Tuvalu are among the least known countries. How do you travel there? Who gives you a visa? If you live in Africa, and depending on your level of education, you will be more likely to be able to recite all the countries in Europe, Americas and Asia. A person with less education in Africa will know about countries like Burma because they knew of people who fought in the second world war. Education in parts of Africa is not always Africa centred and some of the people do not know their continent's 54 countries.
Think about the same in any part of the world. There are North Americans who do not know America so how are they going to know Nagaland? Same if you put it vice versa.
Catholicism is the one main persistent educator in the world, so people do know about the Vatican City but they do not know it is a country and its intricacies. They know about St. Peter's Basilica and wish to visit the Pope. It's the world's smallest country, and has the lowest child rate (apart from Sweden). Many people in the world do not distinguish all the small islands off any continent and whether they are countries or not.
