World War II created a world where there were two super powers, the United States and the Soviet Union, so fundamentally different that they were naturally at odds. To add to the conflict, many European countries were left greatly weakened by the war, providing the Soviet Union a chance to spread communism, something the United States wanted to avoid.

After the 17th of September, 1939, the Soviet Union entered Poland to stake out the claim that had been a secret clause in the German-Soviet Non-aggression Pact of 1939. The secret clause called for the Soviet occupation of the eastern half of Poland. Poland was no loner a free nation.
It took a few days, however France and England declared war on Germany. This soon became World War 2 as other nations set their military operations into action.
