What was one of General George Washington's skills as a military leader

Actually, the first time young George was sent to lead was to the Ohio Territory in the French and Indian war. The opposing enemy took George by surprise-- he was forced to surrender. He was so humiliated and disillusioned that he vowed to never go into a battle again.

But he was tapped again to lead. He accepted but reluctantly.

What is now seen as a skill to retreat was actually more of an aversion to fight. He cared about his men; he understood their hardships because these were his hardships, too. We must put his life into context, so we understand his sacrifices--and his caution.

What was one reason that southern states passed laws after 1800 to discourage manumission

One reason is that Southern whites feared that freed blacks would seek revenge for their past treatment as slaves.

Other reasons were:
1) freed blacks represented competition for white industries and professions
2) freed blacks represented political opposition (as they would again in 1865)

Manumission (which is simply the voluntary freeing of slaves) was unwelcome in the South because they felt that slaves would be more likely to try to escape if they had examples of successful freedmen. Another was that freed slaves might have legal status to hold previous owners responsible for maltreatment or injury. The concept of being "born into slavery" was seen as conferring a lifelong status by slaveholders.

Who wrote in the declaration of Independence that all men are created equal...

Thomas Jefferson
