Inflated writing is that stuffy, lecture-type writing that reminds you of a stodgy old professor winding up to deliver a lecture. This type of writing can be done quite effectively for an academic work, but it can also have its drawbacks. First, it is easy to go overboard and become stilted and artificial instead of being interesting. Second, it is easy to deliver a dry, dull lecture instead of a lively, vivid piece. And finally, if you're writing fiction, you want your readers to forget that they are reading a story and believe that they are actually there in the middle of the action - stilted writing reminds them that it is just a story. This is called "falling out of the story," and is not something you want happening!
