yes you can. 4 main things make up the "common" cholesterol panel. HDL (good)... LDL (bad)... total chol..... and triglycerides. and please do yourself a favor and make sure you have been fasting at least 12 hours preferably 24 before having a chol panel done, unless you enjoy taking and paying for medications that arent needed. Let me put on my magical hat.... I'm going to say that u did indeed fast before the blood test... you are not overly overweight.... you eat right, maybe even pretty healthy.... but yet you exercise very little. Am I spot on?

How is the HDL ratio used to calculate your cholesterol?

You can calculate your cholesterol ratio by dividing your high-density lipoprotein (HDL, or "good") cholesterol into your total cholesterol. For example, if your total cholesterol is 200 milligrams per deciliter (mg/dL) and your HDL cholesterol is 50 mg/dL, your cholesterol ratio is 4-to-1.

What exactly is HDL cholesterol?

HDL stands for high density lipoprotein and is a necessary part of everyone's diet. The higher your HDL number, the lower your overall chance of developing heart disease. The key is to keep your total cholesterol low while ensuring that your HDL is higher than your LDL.

What if the HDL is low along with total cholesterol levels?

It is possible for your HDL level to be considered to low. Consult with your physician that ran these tests and ask them to explain to you whether these numbers are good for you and if they are not how you can improve them.

What foods help raise my HDL cholesterol?

Although your doctor may have told you to lower your total cholesterol, it's important to raise your high-density lipoprotein (HDL) cholesterol, which is known as the "good" cholesterol. It might sound like a mixed message, but reducing "bad" low-density lipoprotein (LDL) cholesterol and increasing HDL cholesterol may lower your risk of heart disease.

What's HDL cholesterol and how to increase its level?

What Is HDL Cholesterol and Why Should I Care?

By now, you probably know that maintaining healthy cholesterol levels is very important. Yet, you may still be wondering, what is HDL cholesterol and why is it important? HDL cholesterol is known as the good cholesterol. HDL helps to cleanse the arteries of LDL, or bad, cholesterol. When your levels of good cholesterol are low, your arteries may begin to clog, which will increase your chances of developing heart disease and other health problems. This is why doctors, experts, and other medical professionals are constantly telling patients to exercise, consume a healthy diet, and maintain their cholesterol levels.

What will my lipid profile test results show?

Your lipid profile is designed to determine your overall risk of coronary disease as well as your risk of heart attack and stroke. All profiles include triglyceride levels, total cholesterol, HDL (good cholesterol) and LDL (bad cholesterol). It may also include VLDL (very low density level) and non-HDL as well as a total cholesterol/HDL ratio or a risk score.
