The Southern states did not agree with the way the Northern states ran their government largely because the Southern states received the short end of the stick when government decisions were made in the north. It is common misconception that the Civil War was to free the slaves, but this was not so because many citizens in the north had slaves in their homes. Abraham Lincoln had slaves. Slaves were not considered American citizens, so no state would ever allow so many of their own people to die simply for free or cheap labor. Civil wars are ALWAYS because the people of a country disagree with the treatment they receive from their government.

The states belonging to the Confederacy at the outset of the Civil War were South Carolina, Mississippi, Florida, Alabama, Georgia, Louisiana, and Texas. After the attack on Fort Sumter in April of 1861, Virginia, Arkansas, North Carolina, and Tennessee joined the other states that had seceded.

Against North.... Interesting fact about Robert E. Lee was completely against slavery and would have fought for the North, however he could not raise a sword against his homeland W.Virginia.
