I am looking for the unit my great grandfather served with. It was either a Maine or Massachusetts outfit but not totally sure. 1. Begin with a genealogy research of your family to find out where they lived before the war. The 1860 Federal Census will help locate where he lived. Of course, there is the possiblity that he joined a unit across the state borders or that he traveled to another location to enlist. 2. Visit a library of a large city that has a good genealogy and history section. There are books published with names and units of veterans. This can vary by state and such. I'm aware of a book that lists all known veterans--but maybe this is only CSA. Howver, records for Federal soldiers are quite extensive. 3. Finally, submit an inquiry to the National Archives. Generally they ask you to provde (a) Name, (b) State, and (c) county, I believe. The more info you provide, such as unit ID, the better the responce. If you don't provide enough info, then their research may turn up more names that will require more search. Many good libraries now have copy of their records on Micro-film, but usually for one state. 4. I highly recommend the same advice that I give to those searching for WW2 records: Ask your immediate family. After I searched for 4 years for one of my ancestors, my Aunt gave me his obiturary that had all of the information that I was seeking. 5. Search the internet. Some people will post info on the internet. A distant relative may have your family's entire genealogy records and military records on the internet. I was recently contacted by a genealogist who had published a book on my Family but didn't know how his ancestor was killed in the Civil War. He found his ancestor's info on a webpage that I had posted on my site.
