Colonial landowners, lawyers, merchants, and smugglers gathered to exert their political (and economic) influence with a constitution to declare war on the crown on England. Their war would have been short lived, however, were it not for diplomatic ingenuity on the parts of Ben Franklin and John Adams in gaining financial support from France, who saw the colonies as a way to engage in proxy warfare with their long time nemesis.
