East Germany was taken over by the communist country of the Soviet Union. The people of Germany soon learned how awful communism was once they were occupied by the Soviets.

They were told where they would live, where they would work and they could not leave the country. Basic travel within the country was restricted. Most were not paid enough to purchase a car. Many Germans who had relatives in the free West Germany could not see their relatives. Their mail was read and sometimes never delivered. Their was spying done on the people and files kept on them.

They could not get the products the West German people could get. They lived in a controlled environment in fear. Their entire country had a wall built around it so they could not escape and others could not get in.

Is Germany still a Communist Government today?

Oh, dude, no way! Germany is definitely not a Communist government today. They're all about that democracy life now. Like, they've been chillin' in the European Union, doing their thing since the fall of the Berlin Wall. So, yeah, Germany is as capitalist as a Starbucks on every corner.

Is Germany still divided today?

No. Germany was reunited in 1990. Since then vast sums of money have been invested in former East Germany and this has done much to overcome differences in living standards between the former East and West Germany. Actually Germany will be divided forever, because East Germany is not Deutschland. It's Wendland, territory of polabian slavs and ancestors of russians. East Germany was betrayed in 1990 and forcefully annexed to fascistic West Germany. Level of life in East Germany (DDR) wasn't so bad comparing to BRD. People in DDR always had job, while in BRD unemployment prospered in large scale.
