∙ 14y agoPrior to the Gulf incident, Vietnam was strictly a guerrilla war; small, unknown, and unimportant.
After August 1964 (date of incident) Vietnam turned into B52 bombers, the battleship USS New Jersey, drafted men, tanks, thousands of shot down multi-million dollar jet fighter bombers, and over 58,000 dead Americans.
Translation: From a cheap guerrilla war to an expensive conventional war.

∙ 16y agoThe Tonkin Golf Resolution was the congressional response to two alleged attacks on U.S. ships in international waters by Vietnamese vessels. President Johnson asked congress to support a move to build up our troops in South Vietnam to protect our ally from Communist incursion. This brought about the first significant move to put U.S. forces on the ground in Vietnam in a defensive role rather than a "support & train" role.
