US after Spanish-American War When the Spanish-American War ended, US troops occupied Manila in the Philippines, Cuba, and Puerto Rico. America appeared as an imperialistic power, whether by design or by chance. Anti-imperialists reminded Americans and members of Congress of our anti colonial history. Some anti-imperialists tried to show a connection between Imperialism and racism. But industrialists, capitalists, and many politicians pointed out that it was our "duty" to be a "civilizing" influence and to bring our form of civilization and government to the "backward" areas of the world. The United States emerged from the war, not only a military power in world affairs, but a nation that would play a large role in the economic affairs of the world. Our industries were constantly looking for new markets and for raw materials. To protect our interests abroad, our navy was looking for coaling stations in strategic areas of the world. The power of the purse and the military future of the United States, gave us new respect among the other nations of the world.
