Japan originally invaded China in 1933 and was involved in continuous military operations there from then on. Most of that is considered separate from WWII however. Japan became involved in WWII with a secret, surprise attack against the United States naval base at Pearl Harbor Hawaii on December 7, 1941. The purpose of that attack was to destroy the Pacific Fleet so that we would be unable to oppose their subsequent conquest of Indo-China, South East Asia and the various islands of the Pacific. Since they sank or disabled all nine of our battleships they were able to make very extensive conquests in the next few months. By mid 1945 their navy had been sunk and their air force was helpless to prevent thousands of huge bombers from devastating Japanese cities whenever we sent them to do so. On August 6 and August 9, 1945 two atomic bombs were used to destroy the Japanese cities of Hiroshima and Nagasaki. The war formally ended on September 2, 1945 with Japanese representatives signing an unconditional surrender on the deck of an American battleship, the USS Missouri, in Tokyo Harbor. Michael Montagne
