Since the end of the military draft and the Vietnam War in 1975; the all volunteer US Military uses an 8 year military obligation for the armed forces. Normally 2 years active duty, and 6 years in the inactive or active reserve components. Or 8 years in the reserve/guard.

Prior to 1975, the military obligation was 6 years total. Over-seas tours were normally one year for combat zones and one or more years over-seas, such as Europe.

Soldiers serving in the Gulf War served between 1 year to less. Many I know served from 4 months or 6 months due to the cease fire and rapidness of the end of fighting. If requested, some soldiers remained longer.
