Governor Wallace used his Alabama Army (National Guard) to enforce Alabama segregation laws in the 1960's; the US government activated his Alabama Guard, making them a US Army unit, and reversed Governor Wallace's orders.

∙ 12y agoDuring the Viet war US males had an obligation of 6 years in the reserves or guard. If the man did 2 years active duty when he was discharged he still had 4 years to go, albeit as INACTIVE reservists. Inactive reservists didn't have to wear the uniform nor attend monthly drills (they didn't get paid either) but they were subject to call up. After Vietnam, the 6 years was raised to 8 years.
