The F-104 Starfighter was an interceptor; not designed nor built for the ground attack role, as would be the predominant usage of airpower in the Vietnam War. However, the USAF did modify 77 of it's F-104's for usage in Vietnam. These were called the F-104C model, they were painted in camouflage and equipped with hard points for carrying ordnance such as 750 lb bombs. F-104's flew over 5,000 combat sorties in Vietnam, and about 14 were lost during the war. One in air to air combat with a Red Chinese MiG-19 (J6 series) during a border clash; two to ground fire, and three to Surface to Air Missiles. The remaining Starfighters were lost to either mid-air collisions or operational causes.
