The Spanish came to the new world in search of a new trade route to China, Japan, and India. When Cristobal Colon first arrived on the shores, he thought he had reached India. That is how the native American aborigines came to be called Indians. It was quickly realized that this land was in fact not Asia. The name Indian stuck, and to this day native Americans are still called Indians. The native Americans, or Indians were the victims of the conquerors. Even though the conquistadors knew they had not reached their original destination, they decided to take as many resources from the new land as they could. They immediately sized up the natives to be servants and laborers. Some of the natives became allies with the conquistadors against rival clans. The conquistadors did kill many of the natives in their quest for money, power, and religious domination. What really took the Indians out in astonishing numbers were the new diseases that the conquistadors brought with them such as small pox, measles, and a host of other diseases. The natives had no immunities to these new diseases which killed around 97% of them in the first 150 years.
