The London Company sent 3 ships to VA with 104 men in December 1606 and they arrived on the James River April 26, 1607. The area they chose for the fort was good to defend, but with bad water and mosquitoes. By 1608, when Cap. John Smith arrived, most of the 104 were all ready dead or sick.

All of both groups were English and that is just about the only thing that was the same. The 104 men at Jamestown were looking for gold and chose the worse land in the area. The New England colony was families who came to build a life.

It was a good site to reach by ship, but it was swampy and they didn't realize it has bad water supplies. They really didn't think well when they chose the site and the result was more than half of the 104 were dead within 6 months.
