Big question and I don't think there is enough space in a blog to answer it with any decent scholarship. There are fewer flavors of ice cream at Baskin Robbins then there are 'divisions' within Christianity. Divisions, sects or denominations have been present since the first century. To keep it simple and mainstream as I know it; There is the broad distinctions of Catholicism, Orthodoxes such as Greek and Russian -which became distinct from the Catholic church upon division of the Roman Empire into east and west - and Protestants. Non-denominational churches exist that would not classify themselves as Protestants (They don't see themselves as 'protesting' the faith or practices of the Catholic church like Martin Luther, just trying to imitate 1st century faith) that have been around for over a thousand years, (e.g., anabaptists such as Mennonites or less than 200 years, e.g. Independent Christian Church, Church of Christ). With the Protestant Reformation came a number of denominations - Episcopalians from England, Lutherans from Germany, Presbyterians from Scotland, Methodists, Baptists, Dutch Reformed, etc.
